HEIC files are about half the size of a JPG at similar quality, but they aren't supported everywhere. JPG works in practically every app and website.
HEIC is decoded in your browser rather than on a server. It takes a moment per photo, but your pictures stay private.
In Settings → Camera → Formats, choose “Most Compatible”. New photos will then be saved as JPG.
